India - a nation, which is fast 'Westernizing', Dr. Smita Jain Narang is an entity that stands for the perfect blend of the two worlds, specifically, through her redefining the 'Old' to suit the 'New'. A Delhi-based Interior Designer and Vaastu Consultant, Dr. Smita chose Vaastu Shashtra as her subject for Ph.D., and after years of research, came up with a hypothesis that can be applied to the World Wide Web - today popularly called Web Vastu. A writer, lecturer and Vaastu Consultant, Dr. Smita owns two firms - Heed Vastu World and Heed Interior Decor (former Serene Interiors), that offer services for residential, commercial, educational, spiritual projects, and lately, to online publishing houses (Web Vastu).

From Botany to Vaastu
Dr. Smita was a Botany student and with a First Class First from Delhi University (1997), along with a scholarship for further studies, her roundabout to the creative purlieu of Interior Decoration (from South Delhi Women Polytechnic), was actually gulped with a pinch of salt by her peers. But once that creative self was unleashed, there was no stopping, and it was there that she got acquainted with, what later became her life-blood - Vaastu Shastra. With Vaastu as comes from the Vedas - as her topic, she completed her M.Phil in 2002 from Mumbai's Zoroastrian College, followed by her Ph.D. in the previously unheard-of - Web Vastu. It was actually, her husbands expertise in the online domain that got her musing -"Vaastu being a science of direction, why can't we apply the same to websites?" Researching on some 500 websites for four years, she identified a connecting thread between the page attributes of a website and the fundamentals of Vaastu science, which if taken into consideration and balanced properly can enhance the overall performance of a site.

With Architectural ruling the roost, how believable is this otherwise obsolete Vaastu Shashtra? Dr. Smita is used to such queries and raised-eyebrows and here, her reasoning, "Vaastu is 'science', not myth", stands up to expel all doubts. Be they the numerous celebrity chat shows, her online interviews or those on print, her articles and Consultation to clients, she always supports her deductions with scientific evidences - ones she applied to convince herself when she was researching on the 'power', 'effects' and 'applicability' of Vaastu to the modern world.

Her articles on Vaastu and Web Vastu, have been published in various national and international portals and magazines which includes Amar Ujala (2000), Outlook Express (2000), Masa Acher (from Israel, 2002), 4 D Women (2004-05), Wired (2006) and so on. Especially after WebVastu there was no stopping, not just because it was new to World Wide Web, but because the net-experts found it hard to believe. Her news and interviews did the rounds of national and international newspapers like Metro (UK), Gulf times, The Register, Herald, Hindustan times, DNA, Webpro News, magazines like WIRED (US) and BUSINESS TODAY, and leading news channels like CNN, Zee, Sahara Samay, India TV and numerous chat shows.

Present perusals
Dr. Smita's present focus is Vaastu Consultation, and more than that promoting Vaastu Shastra as a "science and not a myth". Ancient India's synonym for Architecture was 'Vaastu Kar' and she believes, the balancing of energies between the individual and his surrounding through directions, is as applicable to the modern world, as it used to be. In between, she takes guest lectures in the Vaastu Research Center and Exterior Interiors, teaches Vaastu in various institutes, organizes workshops, and conducts seminars on Vaastu and interior designing. Apart from that, surfing on the net and reading about myriad occult-sciences have so far been her favorite pastime.

Projects in the Pipeline
After the release of her first Book - WebVastu (May, 2006), her next take is on the basics of Vaastu Shastra. Titled, "A Practical Guide to Vastu Shastra", it is a very simplistic inundation on Vaastu Shastra for beginners and laymen with logical and plausible explanations. Not just that, the book also suggests Vaastu remedies, if certain aspects of the indoor architecture cannot be altered.
